Its a shame, but it has been coming, the constant moving it around the schedules, the stupid co hosts, the merging of TOTPs and TOTPs2(arguably a much better programme). But its a shame there's a derth of opportunities for bands on Television these days and thats another gone.

Wow, I genuinely never thought they'd ever axe Top of the Pops. I don't even watch it, but I still feel like a close relative has died.

B1oodFlower- 06-20-2006
Apparently TOTPs2 is coming back so all is not lost...

Love_Libs- 06-20-2006
They ruined it when they put it to a sunday slot.

What the hell are they going to call TOTP2 when TOTP1 is axed??!

I think it's a shame.

I use to really look forward to it.

It's been moved and changed so much that even i hadn't seen it for the last couple of years.

It's as old as Doc Who, and that's been a success again so it is a shame.

Maybe they'll bring it back?

I would like to have seen it go in more a "white room" kind of direction, as i don't think the people that were interested enough in watching a music show were the same people that bought the records that were are on constant loops on the radio.

What music programs do you like/think it should have become?

I use to really liek the beat on late night ITV. And repeats of the Tube. And Naked city.

All their is now is J holland and that's a little wanky.

Yep. With Jools, the show has all the ingredients to be really good, but it always seems awkward. And I HATE the way he interviews people- it's cringeworthy

It's a strange one isn't it.

It's like MOJO gone wrong with all the blues legends etc.

I know we gotta keep the dads...and grandads interested, but the streets are full of kids that want to hear new music. Myspace is in their extended network!

..The J Hollander show is funny sometimes though, im never gonna forget when Seal tried to do a quiet song and he put honkeytonk piano all over it.

I sometimes enjoy the world music aspect, but it's all so fecking MUSO.

If i had a say in the BBC i'd make a great program like the tube. Even the Album show is more forward thinking.

Jools Holland is an absolute fucking dick, but so much so that the show is amusingly self-parodying. And you do get good bands on there sometimes (along with the obligatory 'diverse' artists).

Never watched the new Top of the Pops, but Fearne Cotton is hot.

Also, for the record, TOTP2 was (mostly) shit.

culture_slut- 06-21-2006
I remember really looking forward to watching TOTP every week with my sister as a kid.

I wonder why it went the way it did. Alas.

Right on both counts.

Me too, actually, since it still attracted pretty much all the big bands.

I always used to watch TOTP, for a while it was pretty much the only way I knew how to find new bands. It's a shame yet another music show is getting dropped since there's really not much around anymore. There's just as many music fans as sport fans so why don't we get as many shows? Even festival coverage is short and almost completely devoted to the main stages.

Art Brut Top Of The Pops?

B1oodFlower- 06-22-2006
Bit late now lol

I think they're blaming it on the onset of 24 hour music television. But surely there's still a place for a primetime music show, I think there is, if its done well.

Love_Libs- 06-22-2006
24 hour music TV is rubbish though (especially Freeview ones) becuase: a) whenever you switch to a channel it's ALWAYS on an ad break and you have to wait 4 minutes for actual music, and b) for every good song/video, there's about 9 you don't care about.

The worst ones, though, are the ones that claim to be 'alternative' but only play a band if the NME has done a certain amount of bumming. There is only 2 hours per day of truly good, genre-transcending music TV now and that is '120 Minutes' on MTV2 at about midnight each night. What a pathetic state.
