With the vote tomorrow to decide the host city of the 2012 Olympics, what does everyone think about London's chances? Personally, I hope they get it, as I think it would improve the lives of Londoners both in the run up to, and in the years immediately after the games. And it gives a use for the Millennium Dome.

Unfortuneately, it looks like Paris is going to get the nod, but it wouldn't be the first time the bookm, akers had got it wrong. Good luck London.

i'm glad we've got it. Would have been a huge waste of cash otherwise and hopefully now they'll do something about the shit hole that is east london.

apparently house prices in Stratford have gone up already.
And a speedy train line is being sorted so that you can get there in 7 minutes from kings cross.
One shithole to another.

Cant wait to see how the tubes will cope.
Maybe they will start to provide the water they ask you to take with you when travelling in hot weather.

all this for a bunch of people wearing leotards skipping about for two weeks.

and who will end up paying for all of this.
Londoners thats who..

GRRRRRRRR

Paul you are a cynical b*stard!
I must partially agree with you though. I mean big shiny sports facilities are great if you are into a quick round of ping pong after work, but personally I prefer a nice sit down.
Well I guess it is good news. I've no intention of still being in this jostling pit of paranoia and misery called London by 2012, but I'll check it out on telly.

I guess that there are pros and cons to this.

My friend won the bronze in the Penthatalon last year so i'm hoping that she will be competing in 2012 and then I can see her. So that's the real reason why i'm pleased. But the cons do outway the pros.

How many other cities underground systems provide water for their patrons in hot weather? Surely common sense should tell you to take some for yourself?

And I agree on the tube, it will have to improve, but do you think the IOC would give us the games if they didn't think our infrastructure would cope? The service will improve (mainly through the congestion charge money), and this is one of the many lasting lagacies that will benefit London immeasurably in the aftermath of July 2012.

I'm glad London got it hopefully it will be an opportunity to regenerate the East End.

However I think sports events in the country should be spread out a bit more in future instead of just london again.

Cymric Donkey- 07-06-2005
The problem with the Olympics is that they want the Games to be very centralised, which is why they are awarded to a city as opposed to a country. But nonetheless, I think that the whole country will benefit from London hosting the games, as one look at the London 2012 website will tell you (except that it has crashed at the moment, unsurprisingly).

I'm just suprised that Great Britain won something for once.

Oh what I would have given to see the look on Jaques Chirac's face when London was announced!

Honestly, I've been hearing this all day....it's like the games are next week or something.

We have 7 years ahead in which to overhaul the transport systems/state of London in general. Things will change. And Olympics have to take place in and around one city, the logistics otherwise are pretty nightmareish. There is no other british city which could handle it.

Paul- 07-07-2005
i posted the above link when it was thought to have been a power surge in Liverpool street.

since then there has been other explosions on buses and london seems to have come to a standstill.

the silver link is not stopping at the more central stations
there is no tube
not sure about the buses

and i still dont know if anybody has been killed
