OK, I want everyone here to sign this (if you agree with it), and get everyone you know to do the same thing.

Hmm ok Ill sign it but Like I say if we do change to PR it needs to be well thought out set of reforms. You dont want to end up with mps chosen off lists ect.

frankiegoestostoke- 05-24-2005
Anything is better than First Past the Post though, but yeah it has to be thought out.

Love_Libs- 05-24-2005
Sorry, if, as I assume, 'PR' up there means proportional reperesentation then I'm not signing it. I'm not even clicking on the link!

frankiegoestostoke- 05-24-2005
Its not necessarily PR, just calling for some kind of reform to make westminster more proportional, be it AMS or STV system or whatever.

Your a first past the post man then?

Love_Libs- 05-24-2005
It shows I haven't read the link - I thought it was specifically about PR.

*reads link*

It's not that I'm a FPTP man, but rather not a PR man. I did do an exam on AMS (additional member system?) and STV (something vote...lord) about 2 years ago, though I have largely forgotten most of that. It seems to me that PR doesn't work - in Italy I think it's proving/proven shambolic, and in Germany I believe a party with serious right wing/Nazi undertones is sharing Government now? I don't think in this country it would provide majority Govs, either, and at the end of the day we as citizens want whoever is in power to be making decisions.

lol not unless you take a very very critical view of the Social Democratic party wink.gif

The problem with STV is that its so bloody complicated, its the reason why relection results from Northern Ireland usually come through twelve hours later than the rest of the country.

I wouldnt mind a slightly weaker/coalition government (with much stronger local government to make up for the lack of links between constituency and MP), if it meant that Britian became turly proportional. How can a party that only won a third of the popular vote (only a fifth or a sixth if you include all the people that didnt vote) have complete decision making power?

What do you care? tongue.gif

You're right, it seems wrong. But say a coalition goverment formed after the next general election - Lab/Con - how would that get anything done??

frankiegoestostoke- 05-26-2005
ah but 55% of the population voted for either labour or lib dem, its likely (as the scottish and welsh assemblies have shown) that they would be the 2 parties in coalition government.

Would be great too, would drag labour to the left a bit.
