Wednesday, 08. February 2006 The Crimea, Broken Sleep, The Donde Stars Clwb Ifor Bach, 7th February
The first time I'd been to "The Welsh Club" in ages and it was to see >>The Crimea. I've had the album >>Tragedy Rocks (iTunes link) since Christmas and it's a real treat of an album so I was looking forward to this immensely. The gig was a sell out and I thought the band were superb, although on their >>MySpace page they thought it wasn't good. The band played most of the album to an appreciative audience that seemed to know most of their stuff. The new single White Russian Galaxy was one of the highlights of the main set, but it was the encore that was really great. A cover of Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac was a real surprise to me although from listening to their >>Podcast I should have expected something eclectic. The band finished off with Lottery Winners on Acid which was a great song to finish on and just what the crowd wanted.
Support was provided by the rather Portishead-esque >>Broken Sleep and >>The Donde Stars. Broken Sleep were interesting and rather unusual, the vocal talents of the lead singer are remarkable and from the back of the room it was rather surreal as his voice didn't seem to match his stage persona at all. Their songs were good and the sound excellent.
The Donde Stars kicked off the night and from what I could gather were a late replacement but they coped admirably. A loud three piece, these guys play a Manic's inspired brand of rock that sounded good even though they were a little rough round the edges. I'd like to see these guys again in 6 months and see what they sound like.
