Q AWARD WINNERS It was the old Q Awards in London yesterday. These people won prizes.
Best New Act: Corinne Bailey Rae Best Track: Gnarls Barkley - Crazy Best Video: The Killers - When You Were Young Q Inspiration Award: A-ha Q Outstanding Contribution to Music: Smokey Robinson Q Groundbreaker Award: Primal Scream Q Icon Award: Jeff Lynne Q Idol Award: Take That Q Outstanding Performance: Faithless Q Innovation in Sound: U2's The Edge Q Classic Songwriter: Noel Gallagher Q Lifetime Achievement Award: Peter Gabriel - Q Merit Award: Manic Street Preachers Q Classic Song - Karma Chameleon Best Live Act - Muse Best Album - Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not The People's Choice Award: Arctic Monkeys Best Act In The World Today: Oasis Q Legend award: The Who Q Award of Awards: U2
I always thought it was a running joke that Q were living in the past. The majority of those awards are for old bands -- surely they can't have a yearly award show like that? It's obscene, they'll run out of stuff to award.

FUCK RIGHT OFF! There's nothing new about her.

They can and they will dammit!!They give the Awards to mostly the same people in a slightly different order each year.

What no mention of Paul Weller not as predictable as ya think..
Best act in the world today? Oasis? they havent done bugger all in the last 3 years.
that aint predictable either tenuous, yes
B1oodFlower- 11-01-2006
True ok maybe I went a bit far, but you can always gurantee that U2, Oasis and certain other usual suspects will be mentioned. And as much as I love the manics "Q Merit Award" smacks of handing out an award just for the sake of it.

This has probably already been done, but serious question: they're both (understandably) easy targets, but which approach is preferable, ie. BETTER?
Q (and Mojo and Uncut, that kind of ilk), staid content but in-depth writing and occasional gem...
Or NME (mayfly haircut slagboy tizzy), desperately condescending and shrill, with occasional gem...
Which potentially covers better - and not necessarily novel - stuff?
This is leaving aside zines and stuff. Just out of those two opposing poles, which magnetizes your nail? I'm curious. I fucking hate both, but can see the need for their existence - if I squint really hard.
Anyone?
B1oodFlower- 11-02-2006
I guess out of the two I'd say Q or Uncut simply because when I used to read it the writing was at least of a good standard. But in recent years Q in particular has become more and more of a MOR industry whore.
Matt F- 11-02-2006
Has it? That's a shame. I remember reading it in the library years ago - I'd never buy it, harrumph - and it had a fair amount of good stuff among the features on Sting and Dire Straits... Those nominations are shocking, however.
B1oodFlower- 11-02-2006
Yeah its true like you say even in the 80s/90s it just seemed a bit more substantial especially in terms of its features and interviews sections. I haven't bought it in the last few years, they seemed to dumb it down alot and appeal to mostly the mass market audience. Its alot thinnner than it was too!
I'd say Uncut covers more interesting stuff these days. But there's always industry pressures I guess.

On the plus side, Muse finally won the award they deserve the most, and will probably deserve every year until the world ends. And Crazy won some stuff too.

God, i hope you are being sarcastic
Jim Rhesus- 11-03-2006
What did muse win the totally pompous, selfindulgent award for going on and on?
Actually i am joking as a musical talent I think Matt Belamy is absolutely incredible....they have come quite some way since we used to do Jam nights in Devon with them. Live they are f**king astounding but they are a bit prog for me to be honest. My mate Oli iknows him really well and says he is lovely, 2 shoes met him in NYC with the brut and said he was a complete cock. I cant remember ever meeting him. D you know that they have been together for more than 12 years now?
Love Libs, I absolutely love the wall by pink floyd (the album) how do you feel about it? Have you heard it?
The other awards....well....lets do our own!
