So BBC 2 is serving up a real treat on thursday nights, with the new series of Ricky Gervais' Extrasat 9:00, with Peep Show creators and actors David Mitchell and Mark Webb's That Mitchell and Webb Look following straight afterwards.
Extras has been ok so far, Andy (the main character) is slipping a little more into David Brent though. And TMAWL was pretty funny too.

TMAWL was much better on second episode. The first was a bit patchy really they come over as good actors without the same script writing that they get on peep show. Extra's is genius, I love the way its starting to spread out its targets and managing to get genuine stars to actually act up to an extreme parody of themselves, although it does rip off Seinfeld a bit, what with the whole sitcom in a sitcom thing.
So yeah pretty good although what with Mock of the week you can hardly call it fully "pedigree comedy" can you?

Not really no, bar the irish host whose name escapes me is good, 6 absolutely nothing guests last night.

David Mitchell and Mark Webb did not write Peep Show, they just acted in it. Which explains why Peep Show has far superior writing to Mitchell and Webbs sketch shows, which I believe they pen themselves. I havn't see much of the new show but the Mitchell and Webb situation, which was on UK Play or something, had some pretty terrible writing.
Good comedy actors, but maybe not the best writers.

Thats NUMBERWANG!!
THAT'S WANGERNUM.....
I can't work out whether that sketch is hilarious or poor....
Love_Libs- 09-24-2006
I think some of their situations they dream up are brilliant.
The two actors who have to switch between playing Sherlock and Holmes; the biscuit-telekenisis super power guy, the snooker comentators, they're really quirky observations.
Mark - yeah I wasn't sure what role they had in Peep Show, are you sure none of it was written by the pair?
Mark L- 09-24-2006
Yeah this series may be a lot better than their last offering the M+W 'situation' which is more 'miss' than 'hit'.
I originally thought they wrote Peep Show but no they don't write any of it. Maybe an ad lib here and there, but that is all.
B1oodFlower- 09-28-2006
Didn't think much of TMAWL tonight at all, its just a rehash of the last two episodes, yet it wasn't as well done, or well written. I don't think I belly laughed once.
Extras was the worst of the series so far, but still a decent episode, I like the way it dealt with pr and celebrity, but the use of Daniel Radcliffe was kind of feeling unorginal, especially after the first episode, where Orlando Bloom virtually played a similiar role.
Mike- 09-29-2006
I'm loving both these series, and Mitchell and Webb is way better than most sketch shows. Maybe I'm just immature but I laughed at pretty much everything in it, especially the Fish and Cushion sketch.
Love_Libs- 09-29-2006
I did enjoy the Radcliffe episode last night, but it's worryingly similar - star has delusions of granduer, likes Maggie, gets humbled.
David Bowie episode though - the song! - brilliant. Watched it on youtube earlier, so good.

Don't get me wrong Mike there are some good bits in general, but last night's one didn't do much for me only numberwang and a few of the others raised a smile, for me.
Yeah that was the best episode so far Tim, I agree.

Completely forgot to write, as well, how the sort of David Brent smugness has begun to appear in the Andy Millman character. Fair enough he's having a bit of success and money, but he seems a rather different figure to the first series.

So it was episode 5 tonight, and it's still not quite hitting the spot for me. I want to see the Andy Millman charcter who retorted to Ben Stiller "Were you Starsky or Hutch?", not this current bumbling Brent-esque one.
Merchant is just too good though.

That's true but isn't some that kind of what he's sending up in the world of celebrity and acting? For example tonights one was kind of sending up Milman's attempts at "credibility" and a supposed homophobic attitude. But I do agree it wasn't the strongest of the series so far.

I think that is being addressed in the next episode
