NEW POP REVOLUTION is a monthly night of underground pop music brought to you by Dogbox Records, the small label with the big puppy-dog eyes. And it takes place this very evening at Metro, 19-23 Oxford Street, London W1.
First on this month at 8pm sharp are unpopular beat combo THE LOW EDGES. They're from Shadwell in darkest East London and like to think they sound a bit like The Auteurs, the Fall, Johnny Cash and Scott Walker. They're not far wrong either. Recommended listening: Carfax, Leave This House.
Next up, we're pleased to welcome back German diskopunk elektropoppers PLANETAKIS, who made a triumphant UK debut at our July night. If you own our Blue Skies Up compilation, you'll already by familiar with Beautiful Today (described by Planet Sound as "genuinely stupendous pop"), and this is no one-trick diskopunk elektropop pony. Mine's a triple vodka, ta. Recommended listening: Beautiful Today, Shoes Of Kylie Minogue.
Next on are Edinburgh's SWIMMER ONE, making their third New Pop Revolution appearance. We can't get enough of them, and their melodic, intensely powerful electronic pop has won them many fans in high places. "How, I wonder, can they fail to be ruling the universe?", muse Unpeeled magazine. Give them time, we reply. Recommended listening: Largs Hum, We Just Make Music For Ourselves.
Finally, this month's headliners are Dogbox's favourite pop noirists LUXEMBOURG, launching their fourth single Sick Of DIY, which is taken from their long-awaited debut album (finally emerging on 23rd October). According to Drowned in Sound, Lux "ought to be riding to the upper reaches of the charts, hailed as victors and kings." Who are we to argue? Get in there while you can still say you heard them first. Recommended listening: Sick Of DIY, We Only Stayed Together For The Kids.
Fiver in, four squid with a flyer fromthe Dogbox site. Doors are at 7.30pm and the Low Edges will be on by 8pm, so get there early.
Ta very much a.x
