Lucky Soul play @ City Showcase

(shimmering soul pop)

“It’s soul music by small town dreamers who don’t pretend to come from the Deep South. Beautiful and self-effacing, bittersweet. Like romance, it seems superficial but runs deep. It doesn’t try to be clever: your guts aren’t clever.”

Lucky Soul’s single release ‘My Brittle Heart / Give Me Love’, on their own Ruffa Lane label (Greenwich) sold out it’s initial print run within two weeks, beat Placebo and Sugababes to be Guardian Guide’s ‘Track of the Week’ and picked up radio play across the board. A Thai DJ flew them to Bangkok for a single rooftop gig – they were greeted like superstars and served food pierced with Lucky Soul flags! Meanwhile at, increasingly big audiences were charmed at live shows everywhere, from Vice mag’s achingly cool Old Blue lot, to the crowd who flocked to their single launch at Merc on Carnaby Street “ with those unlucky enough not to get into the store prepared to stand on tip toe to try and get a glimpse of the “future of pop” (Londonist) through shop windows” . Hell they even opened for Ed Harcourt, not bad for a band who no-one had heard of last year.

Lucky Soul make pop in the original sense of timeless, magic songs that are soaked in a mixture strange musical version of déjà vu , the tricksy ability to burgle memories of certain times and places. They are the soundtrack of bitter sweet. There’s the voice of Ali Howard, with its interplay of fragility and power, bringing Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval and the Ronettes’ Veronica Bennett to mind. Guitarist and songwriter Andrew Laidlaw’s persistent faith in his art – and his ear for a direct, shimmering, irresistible melody – is winning them a growing army of admirers, the Raveonettes’ Sune Rose Wagner amongst them.

Last Summer saw Lucky Soul swoop onto the live circuit to sparkling effect, rapidly gaining a reputation for immaculate, emotive performances that had the audience’s hairs standing on end and, as the year moved on, singing along word for word. Before 2006 is out, they should be very, very well-known....

I think they're better on record. Without the big production with sythns and strings and stuff its a bit lacking live... but saying that though they're still better than countless other bands trying a similar line.
