why not write to the NME and tell them what a top night it was, kids? Big up the four bands and let's get some attention on the lovely Dogbox!

dr_gavin- 02-22-2006
If the NME hate you enough to remove that paragraph from their website, they're not going to publish letters saying how good you are. In any case, being hated/ignored by the NME is arguably a good thing as long as you have loyal fans who dont care about phoney trends. Just look at The Cardiacs, The Wedding Present, Billy Childish etc.

I use the NME I use anarchy......

Still worth a try though, isn't it? They're definitely not going to publish letters if no one bothers to write them. Do it, people!

I don't think it's a good thing to be hated/ignored by them. Mention in the NME = lots and lots of people discovering Lux (and the other bands, of course) and Dogbox. That would be a good thing.

Lux or Dogbox should write a press release about the disappearing paragraph and send it to everyone but the NME.

Bill: you should put this story on the front page of the site.

More publicity for Lux, Dogbox and GIITTV and more humiliation for the NME. Win, win, win, win. wink.gif

Good point Dr Gavin in fact I just got a email from David with an exclusive review of the night from one of his mates! We could turn it into a feature...

I'm putting some Dogbox reviews up this week as well...

No, please don't do that! that makes it look like we're clamouring for some of the Boyfriends glory, which we're not.
Let the NME do it any way they like, who cares? We've been resolutely unsigned for the past 6 years now, I think it's just shrug and get on with it time - i certainly don't want to be all "please let us in the Boyfriends' review..." - it just comes across as the pathetic whining of a second rate band.

Anyway, i don't even like Morrissey that much! When Michael Stipe turns up, then i'll pay attention.

(where are those photos then, mr. rhesus?)

I guess there's precious little chance that Gilbert O'Sullivan will ever show at a Lux gig, is there..?

Maybe your honesty, humility and unwillingness to cynically manipulate the press has something to do with that. wink.gif

My personal feelings on this are pretty much the same as yours, as I implied when I mentioned Gedge, Childish et al. It's just that when I suggested that being ignored by the NME was a good thing, Kate's reply implied that Dogbox were desperate for the publicity. I think I should have qualified my last post with "If you want to be a cynical media whore, this is how to do it". Any publicity connected with the NME has the potential to be counterproductive. Trying to prove your anti-NME credentials by drawing attention to the fact that you were removed from their website is a bit disingenuous to say the least (just like people who publicise the fact that they turned down a knighthood).

It's an interesting paradox that everyone loves to hate the NME, but most people still want to be in it. Maybe that's what keeps it going. That and the fact that at least one person on every indie forum seems buy it in order to slag it off in detail. laugh.gif

The NME is only disposable in London though - like it or not it is still the foremost exponent of new music to the provinces.
I would love to be in the NME, frankly, and i'm damn sure David could provide them with their best interviews in years! i'd rather do it off our own merit, is all.

Anyone who would deliberately avoid a venture that could raise their profile is a fool, as far as i'm concerned - why be in a band unless you want to be bigger than U2? What on earth is the point of writing songs and then dictating the audience that ought to listen to you? i want to be adored by housewives, mechanics, indie snobs, pool attendants, conductors, etc, etc... I say fuck ghettoisation, i say 'underground' has been commodity for too long.

yeah, yeah. luxembourg top of the pops, and all that lark.

I agree with Rob sadly as much as we deride the NME it does have a big impact. Being the only weekly music paper left, its influence upon many of the kids in the suburbs, is still palpable. Its admirable that your not afraid to be as big as you can which is great.Look at a band like REM for a while there they did pull of the trick of being big and good....

Its a good point that you would rather be covered in the NME as a headline act, to have your moment so to speak instead of being seen as a band riding on the coat-tails of anyone, as you clearly aren't.

But personally I think its actually braver to go it alone without the NME, ok if they give you press(and I would LOVE it to happen by the way) it would give you a short lived buzz, it will get you wider exposure but will it really have the lasting impact upon you as a band? I'm unsure, now more than ever, the NME seems to be driven by in cycles, fads, and fashions. Surely to have the power of your own organic fanbase(which you have) that won't leave you off the back of some negative NME coverage is worth so much more. To have that independence is worth much more than anything Razorlight, the Ordinary Boys or most of the bands that fill that magazine could imagine, afterall they chew you up and spit you out.Look at Pulp eventually they did it on their own terms, and eventually the mainstream couldn't ignore them anymore...

Hopefully things are changing, soon most people won't need the likes of the NME telling them what to buy(I haven't bought it in a long time), the net is democratising the process, hopefully people will want music covered in a more considered, interesting and personal manner rather than a manner that is often industry driven.People are beginning to see through it. Bring on the new pop revolution, I can't wait....
