586 : London Trash pop kids 586 sound like a night drinking alcopops in the park, bottled into under-three-minute portions of headstrong, hyperactive agit punk. They're '70s glam-punks The Rezillos running from the rozzers, they're Art Brut spilling the Long Blondes cider. So good, we'd even hold their hair back when they're inevitably being sick next to the swings.Already caused a storm with their now sold out single "We got bored" their new one is out this Autumn. http://www.myspace.com/586
ROSE KEMP : A 21 year old with an impossibly rich and reaching voice accompanied by shimmering electric guitars thread paths between the prog of Mogwai and The Mars Volta, the two combining to carry content that is overwhelmingly contemporary and sets her firmly alongside the likes of Carina Round and PJ Harvey. Her songs and sets have earned her appearances at umpteen festivals, National Radio airplay, and support slots with the likes of The Subways, Cranebuilders, Gravenhurst, James Yorkston, King Creosote and Duke Special. Once youve heard her you’ll never forget it, her songs stick in your soul and pulse in your brain like nothing else on earth. Rose Kemp will rock your World. http://www.myspace.com/rosekemp
HEY GRAVITY! : "A hybrid of the venemous Karen O combined with the sultry confidence of Debbie Harry" (Drowned In Sound), Hey Gravity take no prisoners. A boys-n-grrlz rock machine making an increasing impression since launching earlier this year (to a PACKED OUT Camden Barfly headline!) from the ashes of the John Peel approved M.A.S.S. In months they've been ‘Unsigned Artist Of The Week’ at Karmadownload, played the BPI's British Music Week event (with Razorlight/Belle & Sebastian) been bigged up by Xfm's John Kennedy, appeared on Channel 4 TV. Their dramatic live set’s got people talking. "A punky Doris Day with an amazing voice and a wild stare on vocals, a sultry brunette rock siren on guitar. No wonder a lad in the audience got up on a table in excitement at one point." (On And Off Stage) http://www.myspace.com/heygravity
THE SAILPLANES : The reviews say it all “Make a glorious noise that strips all of the best bits from Sonic Youth and Electrelane” “refreshingly divergent sound”, Their New EP”The Deepest Red” will be available to buy. “In no way does ‘The Deepest Red’ feel lightweight or unbalanced; partly due to the powerhouse drumming of Yola, punchy and with robotic precision, and partly due to the evocative edginess that comes from the vocals of Stacey and Tim”. Expect some noise. http://www.myspace.com/thesailplanes
PENNY BROADHURST : Penny comes from a small hamlet in the Yorkshire Dales, but currently resides in dirty old Leeds with her long-suffering husband. She is a musician, actor, singer, writer and spoken word artist. Her epic track "Rhythm Rebel" opens up GIITCD.Here's what the critics say: "A good strong dose of Northern attitude or humour. I'm sure if you put Penny Broadhurst into the internet you'll find out plenty about her...if you dare!" - Patrick Wolf "This Leeds lass comes across like your mum's fave Victoria Wood spitting out the rhymes of Mike Skinner - one much, much less annoying than that sounds. There's fire in Broadhurst's belly and bile in her brain, while her fiery spoken witticisms rock and roar. You can't mosh to poetry, but if you could, then you'd mosh to this." This afternoon is a living installation snapshot of that life. Come and hang out. Bands/photographers make friends/images - RSVP in advance if you can make it as this event will come together organically.
Keep an eye on this posting and the Music Tourist Board section of giittv.1.forumer.com/
Digital Sneakers helped put NX/Rocklands on the map in the first rock'n'rolling place! (Special Needs, Twisted Charm, Bloc Party, Art Brut, New Rhodes etc), been acclaimed by/shown on MTV2, just made ther first film, screened at ICA, Curzon Soho, National Film Theatre, Edinburgh Festival and more. Rocklands 2 includes footage from first Artful Oct 005 http://www.digitalsneakers.co.uk
Our live entertainment all come highly recommended (plus, Ceri James coming to sing ‘Deptford Broadway’ on Deptford Broadway seeing as filmers are there, helps towards a Wish You Were Here of Rocklands - all welcome to participate).
Visuals by the fab as fug Blue Light District who are throwing South East London’s punkiest rock’n’roll party that very night at The Fox (SE13) in celebration of The Chet EP. They also run The Film Nights monthly, and are recruiting new writers, photographers, film makers, promoters and more to South East London’s fastest growing arts networking collective (12,000 hits last month alone! http://www.thebluelightdistrict.com
Photographers include Kye Corfield (seeking good bands, for his portfolio - man, check out the photos at http://www.myspace.com/kyestyley ) and Satoko Owada whose photographs of cult rock band, Mansun adorn their official Japanese zine and greatest hits collection
Plus whichever musicians, promoters, DJs, artists (come and do a bit of life drawing if you fancy it) experience the reality of the parallel dimension of music life.
It’s accidentally free entry (I meant to say £2 to Chey from the Live Bar when he was making up the flyers, but my brain wasn’t in and now it says free in the flyer and it’s all my - Caffy, typist - fault), but there’s an optional £2 towards the cost of the performers, film etc from audience. The entertainment is more than worth that.
If you are an artist/band or somebody who wants to do something (photos? film? interview?) with bands, get in touch (see below) in advance or leave a comment at http://www.myspace.com/artfulmtb and in the usual organic shambles a good afternoon will come together.
If you’ve been to a Music Tourist Board get together before you’ll know that ideas and involvement in anything are most welcome. If not, come and enjoy. A big thanks to the Live Bar who will be running buy-one-get-one-free specials on selected booze-n-food too! The afternoon can be as surreal as you like, I mean it’s not as if we’re on Planet Earth or something. . .
Live On Broadway by (Jane Deane http://www.myspace.com/janedeane and Caffy St Luce 079 0360 1227 of P.O.L.E. CLUB, and their friends), Artful Dodgers everywhere.
