the word...
artful : non conventional convention of entertainment & exhibition - an intergalactic peace conference of fun inspired by arts not arms, glam not glum, and rock'n'roll. artful is created by the participants and audience alike.
much of artful takes place in rocklands (london's south east bank) but as planet water exists in cyberspace, where there is no geography, october's party is at various locations around the uk including stockport (blue cat), guildford (spill) and coventry (tough love records), plus london venues on the planet water wavelength, like the increasingly legendary good ship in kilburn which hosts four days of artful partying from otober 24th-27th.
there are launches of all kinds; dancing in outer space (club by design geniuses, raw nerve) for nebraska’s album ‘the path to the silent country’, for chet (ep party by the blue light district), panda power (a new travelling rock n roll circus!), natalie williams (album) and something special from artful originators, dirty sounds (who’s artful night at camden barfly starring the bronx is already sold out). there will be live recordings, photography sessions, film clips compiled and lots of new friends made...
artful aims to promote and celebrate the hip hot top tips with shows and clubs staged by and starring the movers n shakers of the thriving anti scenes, plus many one off events, installations, art exhibitions, street theatre/burlesque etc. wherever imagination takes people. some of the events will raise funds for shelter, oxjam and a new unregistered charity to help coming talent. all of the events aim to raise spirits. a month of partying. share the joy
some of the hottest new comedians like suzie bennett (winner of funny women 2006), while film makers will be showcased at screenings, and photographers including up and coming young (whipper)snappers on the music scene like rich pack, karen toftera and jenny hardcore.
this year's new cross venue artful event (five floors of art & rock!) will take place on 23 november (a fringe event at deptford x - the annual international contemporary visual arts festival). the entire venue was first used for the first artful’s party(oct-005). it will be a night of aural art exhibitions, with some of the bill sourced throughout october.
artful 005 established a south east bank for london where art and music have networked more since. artful 006 weaves the story of planet water , once upon another time, into the net chapter of this twisted tale. rocklands venues that will be meeting / info collecting places are, so far, the live bar in deptford (two for one drinks/food offers before 9pm throughout artful!), new cross inn and dirty south in lewisham. djs like annie nightingale and 1 xtra’s twin b are in the area during the artful season, while the albany and laban are among renowned local venues loaded with events and acvity for all the family.
make poverty history, but also celebrate poverty making history for itself.
loads of the promoters, unsigned bands, up and coming artists, photographers and film makers are as skint as they come, but glowing with diy (t)art rock chic, buzzing with imagination and oozing enthusiasm, talent and party vibes. highly motivated, professional and exiting, they are the inspiration. highly affordable and approachable, artful is the result. (many of the events in rocklands are £5 and under, with discounts and concessions for students, local promoter badges, fairies, pirates and blaggers - or even free, especially if you arrive early, in some cases)
artful is supported by music tourist board, creative lewisham agency, fusion/ndc, goldsmiths student union and faith in the power of music.
