The countdown to Artful started this month first at New Cross Inn on the Tuesday and then again, on Saturday with the biggest venture to date, an outdoor stage. It was just a little bandstand with a 20foot stage but it was perfect. The vibe was old skool punky hippy reggae party and the crowd was like a house party barbeque without the smoke n smell. The entertainment was top quality with the kind of performances that would be great at a festival at heart.
Not only could we see loads of bands live, got to hear faves like Nebraska, William, Blah Blah Blah and more in the open air. Hmm, more of this outdoors lark with more bands...! Actually, there was Mark from William. They'd played in Coventry the night before so it was great that he could come down. Lots of lovely friends out on the grass, didn't want the day to end. It looked like a magic place with the big fluttering flags everywhere and just across the way the big rainbow tent of Stonewall where drag queens and rastafarians chilled out together. Lewishambles stylee...
Rocklands Bandstand worked in a very music tourist board way...
For instance the lovely multi-talented Jean agreed not only to spin some tunes, but also to compere. It's just extra special to introduce the people that have come to play. It would be great if every MTB event could be compere. Punk poets, cabaret, comedy, whatever, most welcome to get involved. Jean books gigs, promotes, you name it... http://www.myspace.com/stereoslapper
Ceri James sings punky folk pop and is also responsible largely for the I Love New Cross and NX Replugged compilations, as well as promoting various events http://www.myspace.com/cerijames
The punky sleaze glam rock of The Fairies Band who are also exhibited artists and some of the wildest women in rock http://www.myspace.com/thefairiesband
Dexy - solo acoustic pop, also been playing guitar with Nebraska and one of the instigators of the anti-scene shenanigans of the Newer Wave http://www.myspace.com/dexyspace
Street Vibes wind down by winding up and mixing hip hop, soca, Cuban rhythms and reggae to create an outdoor dance hall that partied up as the sun went down. http://www.streetvibes.co.uk
Well, there are so many festivals in Britain right now, but it's the free and cheap ones, where you don't know what to expect, where you can not only have some of the most fun, but be more involved and personal. The weather was sunny, the people were sunny. A totally beautfiul day.
Did it end there? Did it fug. Dirty South had an after party with Bacardiac Arrest and Alice Renouf playing and Tom Hingley of Inspiral Carpets on the decks. JD & The Longfellows (with Fruit Machine Blues in them) had a launch party at The Fox organised by 2bob a right old knees up which kicked off on the live front with another chance for Rocklands folks to catch Blah Blah Blah who should not be missed (by law!) http://www.myspace.com/blahblahblahandfriends
This was one tiny corner of a big festival but a big day out for a section of the local community that could do with getting outdoors as much as possible!
